HELLO, my name is Kathryn and I am an Argentine tango "junkie." For me, tango is a mystery...a deep, endless mystery. It's mental. It's physical. Emotional. Creative. Musical, for sure. Spiritual, even. If you're reading this, chances are you're a tango junkie, too.
You want to know where to take classes and where the milongas are. You want to know about cool stuff for dancers. This website is my first attempt to share that information and the useful items that I love or use myself. More will be added to the COOL STUFFtab, so check back soon.
Click on the TANGO IN STUART FL tab, too. There's a monthly "Nuevo Milonga" where we play classic tango as well as some neo-tango and even the occasional alternative tango.
In months that have five Saturdays, we also have a "Blue Moon Milonga" at Craig Galvin's DANCE STUDIO in Stuart, Florida.
Susana Rubio holds a weekly tango class there, too. She gets very good reviews, so please do come to class!
Occasionally we invite visiting tango professionals for workshops, and you'll find that info as well. We try very hard to make the studio a warm, inviting, welcoming place for all, and invite you to please join us!

I've been sending these updates since August 2008 when my tango partner Bob and I were asked to conduct a weekly basics class in Jensen Beach. The emails started out as a thank you and recap of each week's class as well as where to tango within reasonable driving distance of the Treasure Coast. The classes ended in October 2010 but the update emails continue. The number of classes and milongas has grown considerably in the last three years so I now list tango happenings from Vero Beach to West Palm Beach. It's a highly personal list but I receive very positive feedback, so I thought it might do to post it on this site as well.

It's bad enough in street shoes, but really distressing when your gorgeous Comme Il Fauts, NeoTangos, Greta Floras, or other tango shoes start to discolor and show toe imprints. DO YOU HAVE PERFECT LEGS?
Me neither. I also hate the thought of wearing pantihose in Florida so I've tried many self-tanners and bronzers. Usually I forget to apply tanner until it's too late to develop any color before the milonga. Even if I do remember, there's still a cloud of suntan lotion aroma around me. Yuck. DO THE BALLS OR YOUR FEET KILL YOU by the end of class or during a milonga? This is one of the most common complaints among tangueras.
Part of it, of course, is from wearing high heels. But we're not going to give them up, right? Part of it is technique: unconsiously trying to grip the floor with the toes puts even more pressure on the balls of the feet. Part of it is the shoes: there is usually not much padding in dance shoes, the better to feel the floor...and do we ever!
No matter what the cause, have you found yourself perusing the foot care section of your local Walgreen's or Walmart? Tried everything on the market? Still have foot pain? Me, too.

An athlete, a marathon runner, and an amazing fundraiser, Lisa had no dance background whatsoever when she accepted the challenge to be one of seven contestants in this event. Still, she was determined not only to learn tango but to win the competition. Alas, at the last moment another contestant secured a donation large enough to take the fundraising trophy. But Lisa was a winner for the courage it took to step way outside her comfort zone, and then to persevere with determination and many hours of hard work. It showed in a beautiful performance on stage. We are so proud of what she accomplished and count ourselves lucky to have met and worked with her for four incredible months...

Last week in Monday night class, we were practicing to music that sounded to my totally un-cool ears like rap. The weird thing was, I liked it! Didn't understand a word, but then I was trying to lead. And what I heard was a lovely rhythm and melody underneath a hypnotic vocal. WHAT WAS THAT MUSIC?
Late that night I went on line, looking for the unlikely combination of "tango" and "rap." Or hip-hop, or whatever that music might have been.
To my utter amazement, Momo Smitt's CD "Tango World" came up on Amazon.com and on emusic.com. (Turns out, it's his own hybrid of tango and hip-hop.) This must be what I heard in class...How many tango dancers could be writing hip hop songs about their journey into tango land? And anyway, I loved this stuff!
The words, too, put a big grin on my face. Clearly, this person is not just a tango dancer, he is an addict. He has really touched the essence of what draws us into tango and keeps us riveted.
I'm not one to buy complete CDs any more, but I bought this one! I hope you like it, too. And if you do, please purchase your own copy... SUPPORT MOMO'S TANGO ADDICTION...MAYBE HE'LL BE INSPIRED TO WRITE MORE TANGO SONGS!
P.S. Momo's the real deal...great songwriter and a good dancer, too! I found these videos of him dancing with Emily Bragdon on YouTube.
